Three people were rushed to hospital after a unit complex went up in flames.

Emergency services were called to a block of flats on Devonshire Street in Surry Hills, Sydney, at 3.30am on Sunday.

A fire had broken out on the second floor and firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze before the flames could spread to surrounding units.

Paramedics treated two people at the scene before taking them to Royal North Shore Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with serious burns.

A third person was treated for burns to her legs before being taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A crime scene has been cordoned off and an investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire.
