Surprising link between pop superstar Ed Sheeran and two Socceroos – as the trio are set to rub shoulders together

  • This has consequences for two Australian players who will see the pop star more often

Australian duo Cameron Burgess and Massimo Luongo are set to collaborate with one of the world’s biggest music stars after Ed Sheeran bought a stake in English Premier League club Ipswich Town.

Defender Burgess and midfielder Luongo helped Ipswich to promotion last season and are set to make their Premier League debuts on Saturday evening (AEST) when the Tractor Boys open their season at home to Liverpool.

Sheeran, a loyal Ipswich fan, is also expected to be in the crowd at Portman Road, having bought a 1.4 per cent stake in the Suffolk club.

“I am very pleased to have purchased a small percentage of my hometown football club,” Sheeran told the Ipswich Town website.

‘It’s every football fan’s dream to own the club they support and I’m so grateful for this opportunity.

‘I have lived in Suffolk since I was three. Although I travel the world and sometimes feel like an outsider in big cities, I have always felt part of the community and protected in Suffolk and Ipswich.

“It’s such a joy to be an Ipswich Town fan. There are ups and downs, but football is about the highs and the lows,” Sheeran continued.

‘I am not a voting shareholder or a board member. I just invest some money in the club I love and they do the same. So don’t come to me with suggestions for contracts or tactics to play.

‘I’m looking forward to the Premier League starting this weekend.’

Mark Ashton, chairman of the club, said: ‘For one of the biggest artists in the world to give us so much time and give the club so much attention around the world, while asking very little in return, underlines why this relationship is so special.’

Ipswich prepared for the visit of the Reds with a 1-0 victory over French club Nice last weekend.
