Earlier this year, a report went viral that a Google software engineer could earn a six-figure salary by coding just one hour a day, but a new report suggests that the majority of employees are actually working overtime.
An internal message seen by CNBC now sees an HR rep saying, “Most paid Googlers already work more than 8 hours a day on the days they work.”
The message came in response to an employee’s request to change his working pattern to allow for fewer working hours spread over more days.
Googlers may be overworked
The HR person’s message appears to deny the employee’s request: “No one is 120% FTE (Full Time Employee) for a normal FT job at Google, so working on a compressed 100% schedule is not really realistic .”
When news broke about the employee who had made a pretty penny in just an hour a day, many regular Googlers were mocked and teased by colleagues, friends and family for their light workload.
The confirmation that employees usually work more than the usual 9-5 has now been turned into a meme, shared by countless employees, according to CNBCso they can prove a point.
It is believed that Googlers can request flexibility in terms of working hours, just like many other companies.
Ny Breaking asked Google to confirm this and for more information about its employees and whether they are overworked. We did not immediately receive a response.
For some, working longer is a reasonable trade-off for the extra flexibility or a hybrid working pattern. But with the company pushing back and insisting that employees now return to the office regularly, employees may be less willing to spend more time on their jobs.
