Surge in used supercars like Ferraris and Lamborghinis for sale

Are wealthy drivers starting to feel the squeeze? Used market sees surge in pre-owned supercars for sale – just as searches for £150,000-plus engines plummet

  • Auto Trader says there are 42% more “supercars” for sale than a year ago
  • These are cars on offer with prices over £150,000, including Ferraris and Rolls-Royces

The number of second-hand ‘supercars’ for sale in Britain has risen by 42 per cent in the past 12 months, suggesting wealthy owners are starting to feel the pressure and want to ditch their luxury engines.

Last month there were 3,194 vehicles listed on Auto Trader with asking prices in excess of £150,000. That compared to just 2,252 in April last year.

This includes models from some of the most admired luxury brands, including Ferrari, Lamborghini and Rolls-Royce.

With more £150,000-plus models on the market meaning stiffer competition, owners are also having trouble dismissing them as searches for these engines have fallen by 4 per cent over the past 12 months, the online car marketplace said.

Do wealthy drivers feel the pinch? There has been a 42% increase in the number of ‘supercars’ for sale on Auto Trader in the last 12 months, data shows

Auto Trader data shows that these cars now take an average of 80 days – more than two and a half months – to sell.

This is 24 days – or just over three weeks – longer than compared to April 2022.

The figures show that Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Porsches, Land Rovers and Bentleys account for the lion’s share of the additional £150,000-plus cars on sale, with McLarens the only marque to show a drop in quotes compared to last year.

Ferraris account for one in five of all ‘supercars’ on sale in the market with 627 cars for sale, followed by 462 Lamborghinis and 460 Porsches.

Lamborghini’s Urus SUV model, meanwhile, remains the most popular supercar with potential buyers, accounting for 11 percent of all inquiries to retailers alone.

This mirrors the Italian supercar giant’s new car sales records.

Of the 9,233 cars Lamborghini sold in 2022, 5,367 were its super-SUV Urus model – accounting for nearly three in five (58 percent) of its annual global deliveries.

This ‘glut of supercars’ at the top end of the market comes against the backdrop of a generally robust used vehicle sector.

Auto Trader’s Retail Prices Index, which is based on 900,000 vehicles put up for sale daily, has seen the average price of a second-hand motorcycle rise to £17,946, up 3.6 per cent from 12 months ago.

Richard Walker, Auto Trader’s Data and Insights Director, said: “The wider used car market remains robust, but judging by the big jump in £150,000-plus cars for sale over the past 12 months, the same cannot be said for the very top of the market.

“The numbers indicate that some wealthier drivers are struggling and are now more willing to part with their supercars.”
