A stray snake dodging traffic on a busy main road has been rescued by a man who dragged it onto the beach with his bare hands, captured on footage by stunned onlookers.
The carpet python had appeared on the beach at Surfers Paradise in Queensland on Saturday, a rather unusual visitor to the tourist hotspot.
In video filmed by shocked passersby, the snake can be seen in the middle of the road, with several near misses involving oncoming traffic.
But then a man steps out of the footpath and grabs the snake by its tail, holding it at arms’ distance as he carries it off the road to the beach.
A spectator shouts ‘legend!’, while the audience watches and films the daring rescue.

The boardwalk borders a 2km stretch of sand, Queensland’s Surfer’s Paradise, hailed as one of Australia’s most pristine beaches.
Carpet pythons are the most common snake in suburban areas, but a local viewer said she had “never seen a snake in the 10 years I’ve lived here.”
A medium-sized snake, carpet pythons can be recognized by the markings on their backs, which resemble an oriental carpet pattern.
While not venomous, a bite from this snake would cause significant harm to a human.
Viewers were amazed at the scene and praised the man for his bravery and kindness.
“Bless the man who took him off the road,” said one user while another agreed, saying, “Well done to the boy who took him off the road!”
Other viewers were critical of the people who didn’t help.
“So many people and only one who dared to pick it up,” one viewer added.
‘It’s just a python! Just pick it up and move it!’.
“Only in Australia” that this would happen seemed like the main punchline to viewers.
“I’m pretty sure someone is just dropping pythons to make Straya Tik Toks,” one joked.
