A young woman had to be rescued from a tear by lifeguards in dramatic scenes after she went for an ill-advised ocean swim to welcome 2023 in Surfer’s Paradise.

The woman, still wearing her black party dress and tennis shoes, ventured out surfing on the Gold Coast in the midst of New Year’s celebrations and started having trouble after getting caught in a current.

Luckily for her, lifeguards were on duty and saw her in danger as one paddled out to rescue her from the eddy currents.
