Australian supermarket chain Coles has come under fire for a marketing fail that prevents customers from accessing an advertised discount.

The stores put up a customer notice that limits the purchase of tissue boxes to two per customer, despite the ‘three for $6’ offer.

‘Due to the current high demand for tissues, we have introduced a temporary limit of 2 items per transaction,’ the notice read.

‘This will help to maintain availability for all our customers,’ it continued.

An avid shopper shared a photo of the notice at their local Coles on an Australian subreddit.

‘Marketing geniuses,’ the shopper captioned it.

Hundreds in the comments immediately criticised the supermarket for making it impossible to access their ‘special deal’.

‘They are in high demand because they are three for $6!’ one man pointed out.

‘What’s the point of having something on special if it’s impossible to buy?’

A man shared an awful experience he allegedly had attempting to purchase three boxes of tissues.

‘I picked up three boxes in store and the checkout person gave me an earful about how selfish I was to take three whole boxes,’ he said. ‘They made me go and put one of the boxes back on the shelf.’

Another shared an infuriating ‘loophole’ in the deal that prevents shoppers from buying more than two kinds of any tissue.

‘Last week I tried to buy two boxes of tissues and one packet of a mini carry pack of tissue and was told at the counter they weren’t allowed to sell them to me due to the limit being in place,’ a woman shared.

‘Even though they were completely different products, the limit applied,’ she added.

But another shopper was controversially in favour of limits.

‘There needs to be limits on a majority of items,’ he said. ‘Too many things at my local Coles literally get cleared out within hours of them going on special – and then there’s nothing for the rest of the week!’

He went on: ‘It’s disgusting. I see people buying multiples of the one item they obviously don’t need, while low income people like myself without convenient transport to other stores suffer.’

Daily Mail Australia has reached out to Coles for comment.
