One person has been killed and another seriously injured after a US-registered helicopter crashed in south-west New South Wales.

The Super Puma helicopter crashed on Corrong Road in One Tree, near Hay, just before midday on Friday while traveling from Broken Hill to Albury.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and treated a male passenger believed to be in his 40s, but he died at the scene.

He has yet to be formally identified.

Paramedics treated the pilot, a 39-year-old man, for minor injuries before he was taken to Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

The pilot and male passenger were the only two people on board the helicopter at the time of the crash.

Police have cordoned off a crime scene and officials from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (AMSA) will investigate what may have caused the crash.

An AMSA spokesperson told Daily Mal Australia they had received a distress signal from an emergency transmitter.

“AMSA instructed a Victorian Air Ambulance helicopter from Bendigo and the AMSA Essendon-based Challenger rescue aircraft to commence a search,” the spokesperson said.

“A local skydiving aircraft assisted in the search for the crash site shortly afterwards.”

The spokesperson said crews from the NSW Rural Fire Service were at the scene and the rescue aircraft was returning to Essendon, north-west Melbourne.

Daily Mail has contacted the NSW Rural Fire Service for further comment.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
