Super Mario is getting a remake – 27 years after Nintendo’s beloved video game was first released

  • Super Mario RPG will be available to play on Nintendo Switch in November
  • Nintendo revamps the 1996 game with all-new graphics
  • Next year, fans can also expect an all-new game center centered around Peach

It’s only been two months since the Super Mario movie dominated cinema screens around the world, raking in $1 billion.

But Nintendo is not quite done with the franchise as the creators prepare to revamp one of its classic video games in a few months.

Yesterday, the tech titan revealed that its vintage Super Mario RPG (role-playing) game will be available to play on any Nintendo Switch starting November 17.

Released in 1996, the game follows the classic characters from the franchise, including Peach, Bowser, and of course, Mario.

It first came about on the retro Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) – one of the first Nintendo consoles to exist.

Sneak peek: Super Mario RPG will be available to play on Nintendo Switch in November

Originally released for Super NES, Super Mario RPG has been overhauled with new graphics.

“Whether you’ve played the original game or have yet to make the journey, you can dive into this Nintendo Switch version of the very first RPG in the Super Mario series.”

Super Mario RPG was one of the first in the franchise to come to life in a 3D on-screen environment.

Unlike the adventure-based game of Super Mario Bros, the RPG version saw characters participate in turn-based battles using special items and attacks.

The reboot will be exactly the same, but with “overhauled graphics,” as characters face numerous challenges “with twists and treasures.”

Nintendo added, “Mario must team up with his allies to take on a menacing force known as the Smithy Gang to restore seven stars and repair the Star Road.”

Still, Super Mario RPG is certainly not the only Mario game coming to the Switch this year.

Super Mario Bros Wonder is also coming to stores on October 20, with Princess Peach, Princess Daisy and Yoshi all playable characters.

The track-based game will also see the bizarre debut of a new “power-up” that allows Mario to transform into an elephant-like character.

Nintendo continued, “Touching a Wonder Flower in the game unlocks the wonders of the world – pipes can come to life, hordes of enemies can appear, characters can change their appearance, for example – altering the gameplay in unpredictable ways.”

To top it all off, fans can expect the launch of a new game in 2024 that will revolve entirely around Princess Peach, but the company has yet to reveal the details.

“Princess Peach will star in her own new game, which will be available in 2024,” said Nintendo.

“Stay tuned for more information on this game in the future.”
