SUNY forces freshmen to pass new ‘Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice’ class to graduate, drawing fury from their own professors: ‘This is crazy’
- SUNY will require all new students to take a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice (DEISJ) course to graduate beginning in the fall of 2023
- Critics blasted it for pandering to awakening ideology, saying the course would teach students that America is “inherently racist.”
- It comes amid culture wars over diversity and inclusion as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis seeks to defund state universities that teach such courses.
The State University of New York will now require all new students to take a course focused on ‘Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice’ (DEISJ) to graduate.
SUNY Board members have requested the new DEISJ course for all freshmen in the 64-campus university system beginning in the fall of 2023.
While the university touts the course as a means to promote diversity and equity, some SUNY professors have criticized it for pandering to awakening ideology.
“This is crazy,” said Nicholas Giordano, a professor of political science at SUNY Suffolk Community College. the new york post office. ‘DEISJ is a cultural movement, not based on academics.
“Unfortunately, SUNY responded to the mob.”
SUNY Suffolk Community College professor Nicholas Giordano (above) criticized the board’s decision to require all new students to take a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice test.
The requirement will roll out to all 64 SUNY campuses beginning in the fall of 2023.
According to SUNY documents on the DEISJ course, the class would focus on history and social factors that have impacted racial, class, and gender groups.
Students would also study the ‘creation and perpetuation of the dynamics of power, privilege, oppression, and opportunity’ in the United States.
SUNY’s most recent guidance for DEISJ implementation states that lessons must be housed in a single course, but that other classes must “make significant changes” to their curriculum to meet similar requirements.
Giordano, a member of the conservative watchdog group Campus Reform, said the DEISJ course would portray the US as “inherently racist” and cause students to “define themselves by the color of their skin.”
Jerry Kassar, chairman of the state’s Conservative Party, likened the new course to a critical class in racial theory, which has become a hot topic across the country.
“This is a left-awake agenda,” Kassar told the Post. It’s disturbing. It is dangerous.
“They are treating everyone as if they are prejudiced. It’s like a socialist and communist state,’ she added. ‘Is incredible. These ideas are best tackled at home.’
SUNY Chancellor John King touted the course as a means to promote diversity and equity.
SUNY Chancellor John King championed the new curriculum as a means to ensure equity in the school system and promote tolerance.
“Exposure to and understanding of diversity is essential for success in our modern society and economy,” Kind said in a statement. ‘As a leader in preparing the workforce and citizenship of the future, SUNY is committed to embedding diversity at the foundation of everything it does, from academics to campus life and everything in between.
‘By acknowledging and celebrating our diversity and encouraging respectful dialogue and debate, SUNY provides students with the world-class education they deserve.’
The DEISJ course was approved in 2021 as part of a broad 25-point plan to close racial equity gaps in the New York public university system.
Each SUNY campus will determine how to implement the new course to meet the state’s equity goals.
