Newly acquired Suns superstar Kevin Durant calls on NBA to return Sonics to Seattle … where he began his career as a skinny rookie in 2007
Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant called on the NBA to bring back the Seattle SuperSonics while speaking to reporters during his NBA All-Star press conference on Saturday.
Durant played for the Sonics during his rookie season, which was also the franchise’s last year in Seattle before moving on and becoming the Oklahoma City Thunder.
After a reporter asked Durant which city needed an NBA team that doesn’t yet have one, he simply replied by saying “Seattle.”
He was then asked what he would call the team, to which he gave a second one-word answer of ‘Sonics’.
13-time All-Star Kevin Durant has called on the NBA to return the SuperSonics to Seattle
Durant played his rookie year with the Sonics before the franchise moved to Oklahoma City.
During his rookie year at Seattle, Durant averaged 20.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists. He has improved in all of these numbers dramatically.
Durant was recently traded to the Phoenix Suns following the preliminary trade for his friend and fellow All-Star Kyrie Irving.
He has yet to make his debut for his new team and has been recovering from an MCL sprain he suffered with Brooklyn.
The 13-time All-Star had initially requested an offseason trade with the Suns as one of two teams he was said to be interested in joining along with the Miami Heat.
It appeared Durant and the Nets had mended things after a meeting in Los Angeles between team owner Joe Tsai, general manager Sean Marks and former head coach Steve Nash.
Nash was ultimately fired after a rocky start to the season, and Durant’s situation with the team quickly changed following the trade request and Irving’s departure.
As of now, Durant is expected to return soon, with reports indicating he could make his Sun debut against the Oklahoma City Thunder on February 24.
Before getting injured and finally making the switch, he was averaging 29.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.3 assists.
