Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac shares the private text David Koch sent him after his first day on the job – proving why he really is the nicest guy on TV

Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac paid a sweet tribute to his co-star David ‘Kochie’ Koch on Monday after his shock dismissal from the popular breakfast show.

Sam shared a screenshot on Instagram of the supportive words Kochie texted him back in 2016, congratulating him on doing well on his first day on the job.

“Mate, that was back at its best. It was real, it connected with our hearts, it had charm,” Kochie’s text began.

‘That street is the face of Australia and we see it too little. Good morning, cheers, Kochie.’

He also shared a photo of his mother Loretta posing in front of a storm with Kochie at the 2019 Logies where Sam was nominated for a Gold Logie.

Sam explained in the caption that receiving those supportive words from Kochie meant everything to him.

‘This was my first day! I didn’t even have the job yet. I had no idea if I fit in or if I bombed spectacularly,’ he began.

“The only bit of feedback I got that day was from the star of the show, Kochie! It may seem like a simple gesture, but in the cutthroat biz of TV, this level of support and kindness is surprisingly rare.

“That message meant so much to me and tells you all about Kochie’s character.”

Sam’s celebrity friends quickly agreed.

“It’s very rare… and speaks volumes,” The Bachelor’s Brittany Hockley wrote, while her co-star Matty “J” Johnson posted an applause emoji.

Kochie surprised his colleagues on Monday when he announced his resignation from the popular breakfast show after 21 years.

Behind-the-scenes photos show his co-hosts Natalie Barr, Edwina Bartholomew and Mark Beretta getting emotional between breaks.

During his on air announcement, Natalie looked heartbroken when Kochie said he had spent more time with her than with members of his own family in recent years.

He said he left the hit show to focus on his own business and enjoy more flexible work hours to spend time with his growing family.
