Sunrise host Natalie Barr weighs in on new controversial rule change for the Melbourne Cup that allows men to wear shorts

Natalie Barr has spoken out about the controversial Melbourne Cup rule change to allow men to wear shorts during ‘The Race That Stops a Nation’.

The Sunrise host discussed the new rule with guest panelists Justin Smith and Moyra Major on Tuesday.

Natalie said the change could see the racing event ‘moving with the times’ and ‘becoming a thing’.

“In 1965 Jean Shrimpton wore the shift dress (to the races) and it was iconic, no hat, gloves or stockings and now a lot of people wear minis,” she explained.

‘Is it perhaps changing with the times? Will it be anything?’

From next Tuesday, members aged 12 or over will be allowed to wear shorts – but only in the Flemington members area and only if the garments meet certain conditions.

The shorts must be tailored with a matching tie and jacket and must sit at or below the knee.

Meanswear designer Arthur Galan told Channel 10 he was stunned the Victorian Racing Club had allowed the progressive measure.

‘I’m surprised because the PRC can be a bit conservative, but time for a change. It’s a good thing,” he said.

Despite some people voicing their support, leading horse trainer Gai Waterhouse has spoken out against the controversial change.

“It’s ridiculous, I think it’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen,” she said.

‘I’m not going to Bondi Beach or Altona. If you come here, you should dress for the occasion.

“I saw the guy (model) with shorts on, and I thought, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me. Maybe I’m old-fashioned.’
