Sunrise host Matt Shirvington reveals his secret health condition: ‘It gets worse when I exercise’

Matt “Shirvo” Shirvington revealed details Tuesday of a secret health condition he’s been battling for years.

The Sunrise presenter, 44, was speaking to a paramedic about how asthma sufferers can stay safe during thunderstorm season when he made the admission.

‘I have sports asthma, so when I exercise it gets worse. Especially in the cold. Are you going to get tested for that,” he said.

“That’s a good warning to so many people,” co-host Natalie Barr added.

Sports-induced asthma is a long-term problem that some athletes experience during exercise, making it difficult to breathe.

Patients can stay active with proper care and the help of an inhaler.

Matt rose to fame as a marathon sprinter at the Commonwealth Games in Malaysia in 1998 and later competed in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.

In June, athletics star and TV presenter Matt Shirvington was crowned David Koch’s successor on Sunrise after a three-year plan to prepare him for the top job.

The official announcement was made during the breakfast show, four days before Koch, 67, filmed his final show.

Shirvington said he felt “mixed emotions” about the new gig as he sat on the bench with Barr and Koch for the announcement.

‘Just fantastic. Discouraged. So excited. Cheerful. I can’t tell you what an honor and privilege this is, especially Kochie. A huge job and an exciting job,” he said.

Both Koch and Barr said they were happy with the choice.

Barr and Koch also played a video of the former Olympian competing in a race in a skin-tight jumpsuit.

The tight outfit that drew attention to Shirvington’s infamous bulge as he sped around the track.
