Sunrise co-host Matt Shirvington has revealed the truth behind his decision to leave Fox Sports for Channel Seven.

The former athlete enjoyed a decade-long career at Foxtel, including stints at Sky News and Fox Sports before moving to Seven in 2020.

Speak with Television tonightthe 44-year-old said the decision came down to his desire to cover the Olympics.

“It was simply that Seven had the rights to the Olympics and I wanted to be involved in another Olympics,” he admitted.

“I was thinking, ‘How do I get out of (Fox)? What do I do? I’d like to work at a commercial network for a while.”

Now Shirvo says he has found the perfect gig as co-host of Sunrise.

‘Sunrise is everything I love about TV. I get a little exercise. I get a little bit of everything. It is awesome.’

Matt rose to fame as a marathon sprinter at the Commonwealth Games in Malaysia in 1998 and later competed in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.

In June he was crowned David Koch’s successor at Sunrise, following a three-year plan to prepare him for the top job.

Natalie Barr, who co-hosts the morning show with the Olympic sprinter, said she has known him for years because they “saw each other at events and always got along.”

‘He’s the type of guy who just fits in. He’s a very nice, normal guy with a crazy sense of humor,” she said.

Natalie went on to talk about how she deals with public scrutiny and said she doesn’t feel any extra pressure as the more experienced presenter.

‘I don’t mind a little control. Some people will like the way I do things, some won’t. If you can’t deal with that, then I don’t think you should be on TV,” she explained.
