Sunderland goalkeeper Alex Bass scores dramatic stoppage-time goal

Alex Bass scored an equalizer in the 95th minute to save a point for Sunderland in their U21 derby with Newcastle on Monday night.

Bass replicated the goal Alisson scored against West Brom in 2021 by joining his teammates in the Newcastle box and finding his head in the back of the net.

However, Bass later revealed that he had handled the ball and that he was surprised that the goal stood.

Bass rose above his defender to be the first to reach Ellis Taylor’s cross. He played the ball to the post before scoring in the next phase.

The ball – bouncing off the woodwork – hit the Sunderland goalkeeper who fell to the ground and bounced off the back of the net.

The handful of Sunderland fans in the stadium went crazy. But after the game, Bass admitted that he was actually “handballing” it.

In his post-match interview, Bass said, “I have to admit I handballed it, I didn’t think it would be given.”

It may not have been as slick as Alisson’s goal last season, but Bass’s effort drew similarities to that of the Liverpool goalkeeper.

Alisson scored an incredible header in stoppage time when Liverpool faced West Bromwich Albion in 2021.

Alisson rose above his defender and timed his jump perfectly to head Alexander-Arnold’s throw at home. With the goal, Liverpool won the game 2-1.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian goalkeeper became the first keeper to score in the club’s 129-year history.

Jurgen Klopp was blown away after the game by Alisson’s goal. He said, ‘The technique was absolutely insane!

Klopp added: “He couldn’t have had a better moment. I didn’t yell stay behind, I just let him run.

“When Olivier Giroud scores a goal like that, we say it’s world class and we have to say the same for Ali. If he never does it again, that’s fine with me!’.
