Jack Clarke set up two goals, won a penalty and scored the winner, but Sunderland were denied by a last gasp penalty.
Ozan Tufan put the visitors ahead in the 11th minute.
But Sunderland scored two goals in two minutes through Joe Gelhardt and Amad Diallo.
Hull drew level again in the 25th minute with a composed finish at the bottom of the crossbar by Allahyar Sayyadmanesh.
