Summer weather: Scorching heat before severe thunderstorms and rain across Australia’s east coast

So far, Australians have enjoyed a summer that can’t be decided, from unseasonably cold days to the wetter and oppressive ones we’re most familiar with at this time of year.

That pattern is expected to continue, as parts of the country will experience sweltering temperatures of 30+ degrees before another round of strong thunderstorms and rain.

New South Wales/ACT

A severe weather warning is currently in place for residents of the Central Tablelands and north-eastern New South Wales as damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain are forecast to be possible.

Over the weekend, the South and Far West can expect good, mostly sunny conditions, but cooler nights.

Cooler south to southwest winds will be seen in the west and south of the state on Sunday, with a high of 30 degrees in Sydney.

After the weekend, the chance of rain in Sydney will increase steadily, with an 80 per cent chance of up to 35mm forecast on Monday.

Scattered showers will continue through Tuesday, with possible thunderstorms in the eastern areas and northern ranges.

A week of persistent rain will taper off slightly towards the middle of the week, with the chance for rainfall to drop to 40 percent by up to 1mm.

There will be light winds throughout the week, blowing 15-20 km during the day, however average temperatures will peak at 27 degrees each day.

Victory

Following the state’s thunderstorm warning earlier in the week, Victoria will see a mostly sunny Saturday morning, with an increase in cloudiness in the afternoon.

Showers will develop in the south-west at night, but Melbourne residents can expect a high of 35 degrees.

On Sunday, rain will begin, with a 50 percent chance of up to 2mm forecast for the CBD.

Light winds in the eastern part of the state will move south over the central and western parts, bringing cool conditions to the coast.

On Monday, the state will see scattered showers around the eastern ranges and possible thunderstorms in the far northeast.

Sunny conditions will develop in the south after a morning of partly clouds.

In Melbourne, temperatures will drop from 24 degrees on Sunday to 22 by midweek.

A warm start to the weekend will have Adelaide residents sweltering through another hot 30-degree day, but an 80 percent chance of up to 15mm of rain could spoil any summer fun.

Riverland and Murrayland will have a dry day, but the west of the state is likely to see heavy drops.

On Sunday, showers and rain will spread across the rest of the state and north into the afternoon.

The CBD will see a high of 26 degrees and a relatively cloudy and humid day.

The start of the new week dries up the rain, with 27 degrees clear in Adelaide, with moderate winds on the coast.

On Tuesday, mostly sunny conditions return to the state capital, with another high of 27 degrees.

The BOM has issued the possibility of a severe weather warning being issued as satellites show storms in the southern interior and far north.

The risk of isolated thunderstorms in the interior Southeast will increase on Sunday as partly cloudy conditions spread across the rest of the state.

Brisbane will maintain top temperatures of 31 degrees until Monday, with a 20 percent chance of rain early in the week.

Rain will increase Tuesday to a 50 percent chance up to 10mm and possible thunderstorm conditions.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue through the end of the week, with daytime temperatures below average across the state.

Brisbane will maintain top temperatures of 31 degrees until Monday, with a 20 percent chance of rain early in the week.

western australia

A severe weather warning for heavy rain is in effect for parts of Western Australia and South Australia, as tropical moisture moves across the country.

Mostly sunny conditions with a high of 31 degrees kick off the Perth weekend, with no chance of rain in the state capital.

However, the Kimberley region should expect gusty showers and thunderstorms throughout the weekend.

Thunderstorms in the Pilbara, the Interior, the Gascoyne, the western Goldfields, and the northern and central parts of the South West Land Division will continue through at least Monday.

The temperature really starts to warm up in Perth throughout the week, with a Sunday high of 33 degrees rising to 34 with the slight chance of a thunderstorm on Monday night.
