Suki – who is soon to receive the Performer Award at the 2023 ELLE Style Awards – told how she resisted the pressure to change her look during her early modeling days as she developed a sense of herself.
‘(I remember) the initial pressure to change a lot. If you were different, then they would sit you down and tell you that you will not make shows.
“I didn’t really believe, ‘This is true, I have to look like this to function.’ “I didn’t believe I had to be half my body weight to make it,” Suki explained.
“I used style as a distraction, so people wouldn’t see my body in its pure form.” And I feel like it worked.
“I was very vocal about it, and in many cases I was able to go in there with a bravado and a sense of style that would distract people,” she continued.
The model-turned-singer also revealed more about her journey working in music: “Steps baby, getting better every time. If I go back and listen to all the music I never released, it’s like snapshots of time.
“Those years are so precious to me, all the invisible work I did, the tons of songs I wrote that just weren’t good enough, and the people I met along the way.”
