Successor, Oppenheimer and The Bear dominate the 2024 Golden Globes
Succession and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer were the biggest winners at the 2024 Golden Globes awards, which felt a bit predictable considering how thoroughly they dominated their respective categories – especially the acting categories, which in a number of different cases received three Succession artists competing for first place. by Greta Gerwig Barbie didn't fare too well in the mix even though it was nominated in many of the categories – ultimately walking away only with Best Original Song and the “Cinematic And Box Office Achievement” award.
In fact, most of the big surprises at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards happened well before the ceremony itself. Even now that the prizes have subsequently fallen into completely new hands a new commotion, a boycottand the dissolution of the Globes' original voting bodythe Hollywood Foreign Press Association – this year's nominees caused the same category consternation that the Globes always tend to earn. The survivors, Beau is scaredAnd May December slapped with the label 'musical or comedy'? Julianne Moore in supporting role May December? That weird “Cinematic And Box Office Achievement” category, which seems to mean “movies that made money but were also pretty good”? While the Golden Globes used to be known as the drunkest awards ceremony on televisionand the awards most plagued by scandalsit also leads the awards show package in pre-ceremony debate and mockery about the award titles and categories.
2024 was a relatively subdued year for the ceremony. There were some good speeches (like Lily Gladstonewinning for her performance in Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon) and some good jokes, like Daniel Kaluuya, Hailee Steinfeld, and Shameik Moore presenting the Best Screenplay award with a shoutout to the massive Hollywood writers' strike of 2023 and some dialogue mocking what their presentation would sound like if it was written by studio executives. (Steinfeld: “I'm relatable. I enjoy the Golden Globs. Do you agree?”) But there weren't many big surprises, aside from Barbie's lack of presence compared to his Barbenheimer partner.
