Successor Brian Cox and Professor Brian Cox came face to face for the first time on Friday morning, which caused some confusion.
The Scottish actor, 76, and the physicist, 54, appeared on BBC Breakfast where they revealed their identical names can lead to awkward moments.
The pair couldn’t stop laughing when they told host Charlie Stayt about a mix-up at a hotel the night before.

Actor Brian said: ‘Last night was very confusing when he got to the hotel and said there were two Brian Cox’s so they said you have two rooms.
“He said no I think there are two Brian Cox’s and the hotel said we can’t have two Brian Cox’s”
Professor Brian then revealed, ‘They wouldn’t check me in! I had to change my name.
“I had to put a picture on my phone and say, ‘That Brian Cox, he’s coming later’ and he said, ‘I don’t know either of you – I don’t watch television.'”

The physicist then joked that he might have had to sleep with the Hollywood star: “It could have happened because he was going to cancel – that’s what I had in mind!”
He added, “Sometimes I get in a car and the driver says, ‘Ah, I like succession, I don’t like that astronomy thing,'” while the other Brian confirmed it happens to him too.
Professor Brian shared a cute photo on social media of the couple in the hotel lobby after the incident.
He tweeted: ‘I’m on BBC Breakfast for the next hour talking about black holes – with the ‘other’ Brian Cox. One day I will tell the full story of how I tried to check into the hotel last night. Confusion doesn’t begin to describe it.”
