Woodleigh School: Year 11 camp at Miami Hotel, Melbourne descends into chaos on the first night – with one student expelled and others suspended

A school camp ended with one student being expelled and others suspended after they were allegedly caught vaping, drinking and smoking cannabis in their hotel room.

The group of Year 11 private school students from Woodleigh School were on their first night of camp at the Miami Hotel in Melbourne’s CBD in March.

The underage students were caught after their smoking set off a fire alarm in the middle of the night. The students involved were immediately expelled by the hotel management.

Their wild antics resulted in one boy being expelled from school, while others in the group were suspended.

The camp was part of the school’s Homestead program, which allows students to participate in curriculum-based activities such as learning about the city’s arts.

A source close to the incident said the students’ behavior ruined the camp for other classmates who were not involved.

“These camps are important remote school experiences and it is disheartening that one group of students doing something wrong can ruin the experience for everyone,” they told the school. Herald Sun.

Woodleigh School principal David Baker said it is committed to creating a safe and supportive environment for all students.

‘To ensure this, we have clear and detailed behavioral guidelines and policies in place to protect students from harm. These policies and conduct guidelines apply to staff and students,” he told the publication.

‘Our parents and students are aware that they may be asked to leave Woodleigh School if their behavior is unacceptable – especially if they engage in actions that harm or endanger fellow students.’

Mr Baker added that expulsion is a “last resort” and will only be used if students are responsible for actions that constitute “serious misconduct”.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Woodleigh School for comment.

Founded in 1856 as St Paul’s School, Woodleigh describes itself online as a leader in progressive coeducational schools for years in primary and secondary education for blossoming students and adventurous minds.

Parents of Year 11 students must pay $33,400 a year to send their teenagers to Woodleigh.

The latest incident comes weeks after students from St Patrick’s College in Ballarat went to the pub during an overseas school excursion in Europe.

The boys drank the beer while playing football and visiting war graves in Ireland, France and the UK and were caught after sharing photos on social media.

Those involved were recently punished by the school.

In 2022, police were called in to investigate an incident relating to a year nine school camp at The King David School.
