Will Mellor has revealed that he wants to win this year’s Glitterball Trophy so he can present it directly to his mother Shirley.

The 46-year-old Coronation Street actor made it to the Strictly Come Dancing semifinals alongside his professional dance partner Nancy Xu.

He said: ‘I’m dreaming of winning the show so I can give my mum the trophy and put it on her mantelpiece.

‘Strictly it’s been huge, not just for me but for her as well. It fills her day and gives her something to look forward to.’

He has a ‘Team Will’ shirt that he wears every week. He puts it on in the morning and doesn’t take it off until he goes to bed.

Will, who said he calls his mom every day, added that she is the first person he calls after each of his weekly performances to check that he enjoyed it.

On his VT, Will explained: ‘It’s a song my dad used to sing to my mom. This dance is two people moving as one, two hearts beating as one, that’s what we want.

He was also seen making a video call to his mother as she urged him to “stick together” and noted that they “had been through some tough times.”

Then the star and Nancy wowed with an amazing routine, and when the dance ended, Will stared at the ceiling with his arms outstretched as she fought back tears.

Nancy said of her partner: “I think he did amazing and when we talk about this dance, we’re not just dancing for this moment, we want to dedicate this dance to anyone who has lost loved ones and didn’t get a chance to say goodbye.
