Strictly’s 20th anniversary series has become somewhat tainted after the BBC show became embroiled in scandal in a year plagued by controversy.

Earlier this year, the BBC also failed to address the scandal during its launch episode, even though the results of the misconduct investigation were still pending.

It all started last October when actress Amanda Abbington, 52, unexpectedly quit the show before claiming her partner Giovanni Pernice, 34, abused her.

The Sherlock actress made a series of accusations about Giovanni’s teaching methods, describing his behavior as ‘unnecessary, insulting, cruel and mean’. He strongly denies all allegations.

Giovanni was suspended while a BBC investigation into the allegations made by Amanda and two other former celebrity partners was underway.

In September, Amanda was deeply disappointed with BBC bosses over fears they were ‘protecting’ the dancer during the bullying investigation.

After Giovanni, the show was hit by a new wave of scandal when Graziano Di Prima, 30, was sacked in July for ‘kicking’ his partner Love Island star Zara McDermott, 27.

Zara explained that she did not report the incidents at the time because she was “afraid” of backlash.

IInstead, it was junior production staff who came forward to talk about what they saw during the pro-dancer investigation Giovanni took place.

Zara told her followers that while much of her time on Strictly was “everything I could have dreamed of” in the training room with Graziano, there were “particular incidents that are incredibly distressing.”

The Mail on Sunday recently revealed that Giovanni will appear on the show’s 20th anniversary special despite Amanda’s pleas.

Amanda is unlikely to appear, with a Strictly insider pointing out that she was just one of around 250 celebrities who took part – and that she quit before the end.

Bosses were particularly pushing for Giovanni to star in the special episode, which airs on December 21, because he won a Bafta for the Must-See Moment – his and deaf actress Rose Ayling’s powerful silent dance -Ellis on Clean Bandit’s Symphony in 2021.

The moment was seen by more than ten million viewers and was viewed 2.1 million times on YouTube.

His performance could also pave the way for his return to the show as a professional dancer as soon as next year, although it is understood Amanda is against this.

A BBC insider said: ‘Given his impact and singularity in the Bafta win – which the public voted for – it’s only the stupid who would think Giovanni shouldn’t be included in the reflections in some form in the twentieth year.’

‘Giovanni has had a huge impact on Strictly and absolutely will not be erased from Strictly Come Dancing history.’

‘What he and Rose did was unbelievable and the fact that Amanda came along and made allegations, many of which were not confirmed, doesn’t change that.’

‘Strictly’s bosses love Gio, they feel strongly about what has happened and think it is only right that he is celebrated.’

‘Amanda may have recently had a meeting with the BBC when she made her views known about Giovanni and the show, but Strictly still loves Gio and his bosses know viewers will be happy to see him back.’
