James Bye became the fifth contestant to leave Strictly Come Dancing on Sunday night when the EastEnders star ran into Fleur East in the horrific dance-off.

The remaining couples headed to the ballroom for a spooky Halloween special, hoping to impress our judges, Craig Devil Horwood, Motsi Maboo-se, Phantom Du Beke and head judge, Scary Ballas and the voting audience.

Both couples performed their routines again, with James and his dance partner Amy Dowden performing their Charleston to Bumble Bee by LaVern Baker.

Next, Fleur East and her dance partner Vito Coppola performed their Salsa to Break My Soul from Beyoncé in an attempt to impress the judges and stay in the competition.

After both couples danced a second time, the judges cast their verdict, starting with candid Craig Revel Horwood.

He said, ‘Well, it’s my responsibility to save the better dancer and the better dancer for me tonight was Fleur and Vito’

Motsi Mabuse also chose to save Fleur and Vito, adding: “For me, there were different levels of dancing on the dance floor, and I decided to save Fleur and Vito.”

Well done: In the end it was Fleur and dance partner Vito Coppola who made it after a unanimous decision of the jury

Anton Du Beke confirmed the outcome and agreed with Craig and Motsi.

He said, “I thought both couples danced better on Saturday night. They didn’t reproduce their best performance, but it doesn’t have to be the best performance, it has to be better and I thought their performance was just good enough. Fleur and Vito.’

With three votes for Fleur and Vito, it meant they had won the majority of the vote and would remain in the competition anyway, but Chief Judge Shirley Ballas also said she would have saved Fleur and Vito.

When host Tess Daly asked him about his time on the show, James said: “I’ve said this from the start, all I can do is go out and do my very best. I dance to Fleur East, I tried my best but she is phenomenal.

‘I had the best time on this show and I have a friend for life’ [in Amy]All I can do is thank the family, and I now have a new family. It’s a competition but you don’t feel like backstage, you really feel like everyone has each other’s backs and everyone just wants everyone to do their best!’
