Stricken wife calls cops after realizing husband had ‘committed love CRIME’ while scrolling Facebook

A Houston man is facing charges of bigamy after his wife was scrolling through Facebook and made the shocking discovery that he was married to another woman.

Marcus Andra Shorten, 53, is currently married to two or more women, police said, after her third wife, Tammie, exposed her husband’s alleged crimes on social media.

Tammie married Shorten in 2012, but split in 2019. In an interview, she claimed that the couple never officially divorced because Shorten was afraid of being seen as a “failure.”

Shorten’s latest wife came into the picture in December when Tammie found a wedding registry for her and her husband online. A wedding photo obtained by DailyMail.com appears to show the ceremony that took place earlier this year.

The woman’s name remains unknown and there is no indication that she knew of Shorten’s illegal activities. Police are now looking for him, after finding two marriage licenses but no divorce decrees. He is currently charged with bigamy.

“You can’t just lie and mislead people for your own pleasure,” Tammie said ABC13 in an interview in which she chose not to show her face.

“I said to him, ‘Before you let the whole world know what you’re doing, you need to make sure you’ve got your affairs in order,’” she continued, embarrassed by the attention.

It’s not that you don’t know what a divorce is because you’ve been married several times.

“I’ve been made a fool of,” she concluded.

According to the now-defunct registry, Shorten and his youngest wife married in January after Tammie confronted her ex-girlfriend about knowing about his upcoming wedding.

She reportedly reminded him that they were still married, but he went ahead with the bigamy anyway, it is alleged.

ABC13 also obtained that marriage license and shared an image of it in their report.

Social media posts from Shorten’s family from this period show them celebrating the nuptials. His sister Monica Shorten wrote alongside a roll of wedding photos: ‘Happy Birthday my only big brother.’

In a telephone conversation with one of the newspaper’s reporters, Shorten denied being married to anyone and said he was unaware of the allegation of bigamy, which is a rare charge.

“I’ve been made a fool of,” she concluded, sharing photos of her and her estranged husband. His number of wives is at least two, but there could be more, officers said.

However, bigamy is a third-degree felony, punishable by a maximum sentence of ten years not only in Texas but throughout the country.

Bigamy is defined as the act of going through a marriage ceremony with one person while legally married to another – not to be confused with polygamy,

Polygamy is having more than one partner at the same time. To experience polygamy, one must commit bigamy.

Both are considered crimes, and Texas bigamy law gives officers the right to arrest someone they believe is married to someone else, while he or she is still married to someone else.

In addition to a prison sentence, Shorten could also face a fine of up to $10,000 under state law.
