Streaming service MAX CRASHES on launch day: users complain that they can’t log in

Users of Warner Bros. Discovery’s new streaming service MAX are complaining of major issues preventing them from even logging into the new app on day one.

Dozens of Twitter users called out to the designated “MAX Help” account, reporting that they were unable to log in or access the thousands of movies and TV shows now streaming.

“Great first day for MAX. Could log in but can’t seem to get past this welcome page no matter how many times I click the button,” Twitter user Kyle Bella wrote.

Bella confirmed a grab of a screen with a “start streaming” button that he said the app wouldn’t allow him to click to access the platform.

It’s a rocky start for the app, which dares to combine the prestigious television on HBO with content from Discovery, including TLC shows like “My 600-Lb Life.”

The app used to be called HBO Max, but dropped the HBO portion as it added content from other channels.

Within hours, MAX Help responded to hundreds of tweets from angry users trying to access programs like “Succession” and “Barry.”

“How come the hell your app doesn’t work at launch?! How do we log in and transfer our subscription/data? #AmateurHour #pathetic,” one person wrote.

‘@StreamOnMax MAX works on all my devices except Samsung Chromebook. Crashes every time I open it. I’ve tried everything including uninstalling and installing seven times,” another Twitter user added.

‘I can not log in. NEVER had a problem logging into HBO MAX. Now that the change to MAX has been made, I click on login and immediately get an error message. Very annoying and already making me skeptical about switching,” said user Arkeedah McCormick.

McCormick captioned her tweet with the hashtags “CantLogin,” “Error,” and “HotMess.”

‘@StreamOnMax I need customer support! I am very angry with this upgrade as I cannot enjoy my account,” one angry user wrote.

“You should have started later because you have MANY MANY bugs to fix,” another added.

“Isn’t Max working on the Roku?!” asked Andrew Dustin Vargas.

Several users reported that the app was not working on their Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, and Apple TV.

The hits keep coming for the app, which has also been the butt of social media pranks, sparked viral memes, and been targeted by other companies.

On Tuesday morning, NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock took a dive at MAX by tweeting that, unlike its rival, it won’t be dropping the first part of its name.

“I know you are all very disappointed, but I will *not* drop the first half of my name anytime soon,” Peacock’s official Twitter account shared Tuesday morning.

The tweet quickly exploded on the social media app, receiving thousands of retweets and favorites and hundreds of replies, including from other brands piling up.

“How fun happened…” Entertainment Weekly wrote in response accompanied by a photo of actor Mads Mikkelsen looking lonely and smoking a cigarette.

The company announced the name change in April, sharing that the app combines the iconic status of HBO shows with a wide variety of Discovery projects.

“Max is the one to watch,” WBD CEO David Zaslav said at a press event at the time.

The move comes a full year after the $43 billion merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery in April 2022.

MAX officially launched on May 23 and costs $9.99 per month for the cheapest plan and $19.99 for ‘Max Ultimate Ad Free’.

Current MAX subscription numbers are not available, but reports indicate that HBO, HBO Max and Discovery+ ended Q4 in 2022 with 96.1 million users.

In early May, Warner Bros. officials said. Discovery that they expect their new streaming service to turn a profit in 2023 after losing $217 million in 2022.

“It’s an important time for Warner Bros. Discovery. We went through some major restructuring and repositioned our businesses with more precision and focus,” Zaslav said in a statement.

WBD officials added that they expect to break even in 2024 and become generally profitable in 2025.
