Stranger Things’ Noah Schnapp came out as gay on social media Thursday afternoon.

The 18-year-old actor shared the news in a TikTok clip where he was wearing a gray hoodie while lying on a white pillow.

“When I finally told my friends and family I was gay after being scared in the closet for 18 years and all they said was ‘we know,'” he wrote about the video.

He also said in the video: ‘I guess I’m more like Will Byers than I thought!’

In a recent interview, the actor spoke about growing alongside his on-screen character and the importance of the “slow arc” of his sexuality.

speaking to Variety, the rising star said: ‘Obviously it was hinted at in season 1 – he was always there but you never really knew, is it just that he grows up slower than his friends? Now that he has aged, they made it very real and obvious.

It is now 100% clear that he is gay and loves Mike. But before, it was a slow arc.

Noah explained that not having Will “suddenly be gay” was done “beautifully”, adding that it was important to see the performance of the beat matter to viewers who saw his past reflected in his character.

“They’re writing this real character and this real journey and real struggle and they’re doing it very well,” he said.

Noah also told the outlet that he felt it would be a spoiler to confirm Will’s journey in discovering his sexuality.

‘I think it has been difficult. Years ago in Season 1, I didn’t know where the Duffers were going with this character. So I was figuring it out together with the audience,” she said. “But now that I’ve talked to them and seen the show, I know what they want to do with it.”

Noah added that Will’s “multifaceted trauma” has been a challenge in his growth as an actor, because the role he plays is affected by so many different things.

He said Variety:’…I really have to keep in mind, like, this isn’t just a one-layer thing he’s struggling to get out of… he was captured by the Demogorgon and then by his friends, they never recognized him, and now he is afraid to go out and does not know if they will accept him.’

Schnapp recently started his freshman year at the University of Pennsylvania.
