A teacher is on the run after being accused of having sex with a student in a high school classroom.

Caitlin Thao, 24, was a substitute teacher at St Paul City School in Minnesota until earlier this year, where she met the teen.

The school sent a letter to parents on Friday explaining that the alleged illegal sex took place with a 17-year-old boy after school in an empty classroom.

Thao appeared to be in hiding when a nationwide arrest warrant was issued for her in Ramsey County District Court last week.

The teen told police on March 13 that he had sex with Thao about six weeks earlier in the classroom where she taught.

She invited him to her home, but he declined, court documents allege.

Thao resigned just weeks later in late February and reportedly told a social worker at the mental health unit at Regions Hospital where she was being treated.

Thao was charged with criminal sexual conduct in the third degree and faces a prison sentence of up to 15 years and a fine of up to $30,000.
