Stormzy has revealed how his 2020 split from three-year-old girlfriend Maya Jama inspired a wave of self-growth and realization.

The 29-year-old rapper admitted the split “showed me I was a boy,” while speaking with responsibility in the two years since their split – which ended amid accusations the musician had been unfaithful.

He shared that he grew up a lot in recent years and attributed it to the split while telling the publication, “I think my breakup with Maya was still very heavy on my heart. I had never experienced a breakup and the feelings that come with it.

“And I never wanted to be in a position where I felt what I felt. Because it showed me I was a boy. And I don’t want to go any further as a boy. I’ve seen that manifest in other people. And I don’t want to be like that.’

Continuing with the changes he’s made, Stormzy admitted he’s now taken responsibility for “disrespecting” his former partner.

He explained: ‘What is the necessary work that I need to do to ensure that I am not in this position again?

That means growth, responsibility, changing my character, changing my routines, my habits, my tradition, my values, my morals. Because how I feel now and how I made someone else feel and how I destroyed a world I lived in – I just never want to be in this position again. So what should I do?’

Looking to the future, Stormzy describes his transition from a boy to a man – revealing his hopes of getting married and having children.

My version of success now requires a man: not just more music and more money. Now it means taking care of my family, having children, having a wife, even understanding marriage and raising children, and you need a man for that,” he said.

And last week, she was spotted hugging ex Stormzy when they ran into each other at Kendrick Lamar’s concert.

It’s unclear if the former couple had arranged to meet, but after a hug, they spent the rest of the evening together before going their separate ways.

Spectators told how the pair later stood side by side in the VIP area, enjoying each other’s company as they watched the American superstar.
