Storm Kimberly Dewhirst Oates: Gladstone single mum’s incredible spray at police after she crashed her car into a brick wall and tried to run away

A heavily intoxicated single mother swore at police and tried to prevent them from taking a breath test after she tried to flee the scene of a horrific crash, a court has heard.

Storm Kimberly Dewhirst Oates, 33, pleaded guilty to drink driving, obstructing police and causing a public nuisance at Gladstone Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

The court heard the former aged care worker crashed her Nissan Navarra into a brick wall on Toolooa Street, in Gladstone, central Queensland, at about 12.25am on June 14.

Police patrolling the area saw the crash and pulled over behind the destroyed vehicle. Courier post reported.

Officers reportedly arrived just in time to see Dewhirst Oates get out of the driver’s seat before fleeing the scene.

Police arrested the mother of six a short time later and attempted to administer a breathalyzer test before Dewhirst Oates ‘slapped’ the breathalyzer away, the court heard.

Police prosecutor Jennifer Leach said a “drunk” Dewhirst Oates shouted at officers before she began swearing.

“You bastards, of course I’m drunk, idiot,” she told police.

It is believed that stunned residents were walking past the crime scene at the time.

Despite repeated warnings not to continue her tirade, Dewhirst Oates continued to shout and curse at police.

Eventually, the officers administered a breath test, which showed Dewhirst Oates reading 0.140, nearly three times the legal limit.

Her lawyer Bianca Wieland told the court that her client is a single mother who is solely responsible for the care of her children.

She also told the court that Dewhirst Oates used to care for her mother.

“When she committed this offence, there was a lot going on in her life – with her mother’s health and with her life in general,” Ms Wieland said.

She said her client admitted to drinking “way too much” and understands the consequences of her actions.
