You’ve been storing your eggs wrong! Experts reveal the correct place to keep them – and it’s NOT in the fridge door
They are a staple in kitchens across the UK.
But it turns out you’ve probably been storing your eggs incorrectly.
So says Adam Oakley, a storage expert from Door to Store, who has revealed the right place to keep them.
Most refrigerators are equipped with special egg compartments in the door.
However, Mr Oakley says this position is far from ideal and could even increase the risk of contamination and breakage.
“The refrigerator door experiences constant temperature fluctuations due to frequent opening and closing,” he explains.
‘This unstable environment creates conditions in which bacteria can thrive and weaken the egg’s natural protective barrier, accelerating decay.’
Instead of the door, the expert claims that eggs should be placed in the deeper center section of your refrigerator.

The center of your refrigerator maintains a constant temperature, usually below 2°C.
According to Oakley, this is crucial for maintaining the freshness of your eggs.
You may be concerned that if you store your eggs in the middle of the refrigerator, you risk ingesting unwanted odors or flavors from other foods.
However, Mr Oakely says a special container or container with a lid should be sufficient.
“This extra step not only helps maintain quality, but also keeps your refrigerator more organized,” he added.
Meanwhile, Mr Oakley strongly advises those tempted to skip the fridge altogether to do so.
“Eggs stored at room temperature begin to lose quality within a few days, especially in warmer climates,” he noted.
‘While eggs stored outside the refrigerator should ideally be used within 1 to 3 weeks, refrigerated eggs can keep for up to 3 to 5 weeks and retain their freshness.’

However, even refrigerated eggs have an expiration date.
‘Although refrigeration significantly extends shelf life, it is always best to consume eggs within a few weeks to ensure optimal taste and quality,’ added Mr Oakley.
In addition to placing them in the refrigerator, the expert also has several tips to keep your eggs fresh for longer.
First, he recommends keeping them in the original box, which will provide a protective barrier.
Next, don’t wash your eggs before storing them as this removes the natural coating and makes them more susceptible to bacteria.
You should also place the eggs with the pointed end facing down, to help maintain the central position of the yolk.
Finally, Mr. Oakley says to keep eggs away from strong-smelling foods to prevent them from picking up unwanted odors.
