Steve Mace Cronulla Sharks: Hero NRL footy club boss tells all after suffering knife wound while trying to protect his son during Sydney stabbing rampage

Cronulla Sharks chairman Steve Mace has told a traumatic story about the alleged stabbing that took place in Sydney’s south on Sunday morning after he was injured while protecting his son amid chaotic scenes.

Emergency services rushed to Old Bush Road, just off the Princes Highway at Engadine, at around 9.15am on Sunday following reports of a multi-vehicle crash.

Several passengers in the cars reportedly suffered stab wounds and a police officer was also injured.

One person suffered a cardiac arrest and a 40-year-old woman is among the passengers rushed to St. George Hospital.

Another patient suffered a stab wound to the abdomen, while a third had a broken arm.

The alleged knifeman, 55, was treated at the scene by paramedics and has since been arrested.

Mace admitted he suffered a cut to his hand when the alleged attacker turned his attention to his son Cooper amid the chaos.

The Sharks boss was driving to a football match with his son when an accident happened right in front of them. He himself was caught up in the horrific scene when he got out to help.

I could hear him [the alleged attacker] screaming but I could hear her [the passenger in a car] “More screaming,” Mace told the Sydney Morning Herald.

I ran to the other side [of the car] and he just stabbed her mercilessly… I try to drag her out from between him and him while he tries to stab me.

“I said, ‘Stop, stop, let her!’ He said, ‘No, fuck her. She changed my radio station.’”

‘Another guy came to grab her by her legs, but then… [the alleged attacker] cut him right through his chest.

‘He [the alleged attacker] went to get Cooper and then I had to run. Luckily he stayed mad and came back to my side.

“He said, ‘We’re going to die together, we’re going to die together’… Eventually the officers were able to shoot him with the Taser.

He ripped it out and ran into the road.

‘I only have a cut on my hand, but the other guy [who helped the woman] got a big cut in his chest.’

Witnesses said there was “blood everywhere” at the scene of the accident

Another witness told Ny Breaking Australia that the 55-year-old alleged knifeman was driving a white sedan onto the Princes Highway when he was hit by a blue car.

He said a bystander rushed to the white car to help and discovered the 40-year-old female passenger had been stabbed.

The driver of the white vehicle then allegedly stabbed the Good Samaritan.

‘He [the alleged knifeman] “He was ranting and then the police came and arrested him and shouted ‘get out of the way’ and he tried to harm himself and cut his wrist and throat,” the witness said.

‘Then they chased him to my house and tried to resuscitate him.

“He looked pretty bad. He lost a lot of blood.”

Witnesses reported seeing the white car driving through the area at high speed just before the accident.

The alleged knifeman, 55, was treated at the scene by paramedics and has since been arrested.

Another witness told Ny Breaking Australia he initially thought the stabbing and the car crash were two separate incidents because they happened at two locations about 200 metres apart.

He said he saw a blue and white car crash on the Princes Highway before another man was arrested at a black Hyundai further away.

“The accident happened at the traffic lights and there was a man there yelling and swearing for about 20 minutes,” he said.
