Steve Albini dead at 61: Iconic music producer who worked with Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey and more passes away from a heart attack

Steve Albini, the iconic alternative music pioneer who produced Nirvana’s In Utero album, has died at the age of 61.

The Italian-American musician and record producer died of a heart attack, officials at his recording studio, Electric Audio, confirmed.

Kurt Cobain and his band Nirvana hired Albini to produce their third album In Utero in 1993, the band’s last studio album before Cobain shot himself.

Albini founded Electrical Audio, a recording studio complex in Chicago, and is said to have worked on thousands of albums in various capacities from audio engineering to production.

In his legendary career, Albini worked with musicians such as Pixies, Bush, Melt Banana, the Breeders, Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker and PJ Harvey.

He also collaborated with former Led Zeppelin members Jimmy Page and Robert Plant.

In addition to his production work, Abini also played in several bands, most notably Big Black and Shellac.
