Stephen Mulhern is rushed to hospital after collapsing at Pizza Express after his beloved father’s death

Stephen Mulhern was taken to hospital on Wednesday after collapsing while eating at a Pizza Express.

The TV presenter, 47, who is mourning the death of his father Christopher, was reacting to an anesthetic he had earlier in the day while enjoying a drink.

According to The sunAn ambulance was called for Stephen after staff became concerned about him at around 8pm.

As a precaution, he was taken from Sunningdale, Berks, to nearby Frimley Park Hospital in Camberley, Surrey after being checked by paramedics.

A source said: ‘Stephen has been going through an incredibly difficult time recently. He mourns the loss of his father to whom he was so close.

“He also suffers from several well-documented health issues and underwent a procedure Wednesday morning that required local anesthesia.

“He went out that night for a quiet solo dinner, had a few drinks and just reacted incredibly poorly. He’s only human, and his father’s death hit him hard.”

After paramedics helped Stephen, he called his mother to assure her he was okay.

He is now resting at home and is shocked that he reacted so publicly to the anesthesia.

A spokesperson for Stephen told MailOnline: ‘Stephen has had an incredibly tough time in recent weeks. His beloved father recently passed away, which has hit him hard and has understandably been very stressful.

‘In addition, he had a procedure yesterday (Wednesday). After the anesthesia was administered, he drank a few drinks which made him feel unwell and that was true.’

Stephen has continued support from his team, ITV bosses and long-time friend and colleague Holly Willoughby.

The Deal Or No Deal star was born in East London in 1977 to market trader parents Christopher and Maureen.

He started out as a magician before becoming one of Britain’s most popular TV presenters.

He has credited his success to his parents saying, “I don’t mean to sound soppy, but they worked so incredibly hard to raise me and my two brothers and sister.”

Stephen began his career at CITV in 1998, working with Fearne Cotton on the children’s television program Finger Tips. He also enjoyed a solo presenting role on children’s show Tricky TV from 2005 to 2010 and co-hosted Holly & Stephen’s Saturday Showdown (originally called Ministry of Mayhem) with Holly Willoughby in the 1990s.

He made the leap into adult television in 2006 when he presented the ITV2 spin-off Dancing on Ice: Defrosted, with former co-presenter Holly and Phillip Schofield presenting the main show.

He also worked with the pair when he presented on The Hub, a small part of This Morning.

Stephen received another spin-off the following year, with ITV2 spin-off Britain’s Got More Talent, while the main show was presented by Ant & Dec.

His first primetime hosting gig came in 2010 when he fronted Magic Numbers on ITV and three years later he landed the revived version of the ITV game show Catchphrase.

Other notable shows helmed by Stephen include ITV’s Big Star’s Little Star, Sunday Side Up, Get Your Act Together and ITV2 panel show Reality Bites.

He gained more work alongside Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly in 2016 when he took over from Ashley Robert as presenter of the Ant vs Dec segment on Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.

Another segment he presented on the show, In For A Penny, was given its own standalone show, with Stephen at the helm.

In addition to TV work, Stephen presented Sunday Mornings on Heart Radio with Emma Willis for six years until 2018 and is a regular stand-in on Virgin Radio UK.
