Stephen A. Smith has questioned Kelly Stafford after the wife of Rams quarterback Matthew admitted on a recent podcast that she once dated his college backup to make him jealous.
Speaking about the From the vine podcast, Kelly revealed that she decided to ‘p***’ her future husband – and father of their four children – when he casually addressed their relationship.
And even though the incident is far in the past (Stafford ended his college career in 2008), Smith was incredulous that the passerby’s wife would make the episode public.
“How do you all know that men have egos, and men are ego-dominant? But you forget that when it comes to your own husband,” he began Stephen A. Smith Show.
“If you’re Mrs. Stafford, what could possibly make you think it’s okay for you to go home after revealing to the public, ‘I kicked it with his backup.’
Matthew Stafford’s wife Kelly dated the quarterback’s backup just to make him jealous
But Stephen A. Smith couldn’t understand why Kelly would reveal that to the public
“What possible, possible benefit could you get from that with a husband of yours?”
Smith added that he wasn’t “insulting” Kelly’s character, as he met her once and considers her a “nice lady.”
Still, he ended the video by asking, “What makes you think that’s okay?”
Stafford and Kelly met at the University of Georgia, where the latter was a cheerleader for the football team.
However, she said their relationship was “not that cute” at first when she dated his backup to get back at him for not committing to her.
“I hated him, I loved him,” Kelly revealed of the early days of their relationship. “I went out with the backup (quarterback) to finish him off – which worked.”
She added: “He was the bad boy too. Matthew is so sweet, a southern gentleman, all that stuff. And the backup was completely the opposite and it upset him.”
Kelly added that Stafford and the “bad boy” backup lived in the same dorm, and that he would notice her car there.
“So at one point he waited, followed me out and got into my car. And it wouldn’t work out. I thought, ‘This is great, it works!’
The Staffords – now happily married – had a rocky start to their relationship in college
Joe Cox (L) and Joe Tereshinski (R) were backup quarterbacks at Georgia while Stafford was the starter, but it is unclear if either is the player in question
After she told him to get out of her car, Stafford responded, “He’s not right for you.” To which Kelly replied, “You can’t tell me!”
During the 2006 season, Stafford was a freshman who played backup to Joe Tereshinski III before taking the starting spot. Joe Cox also played quarterback for the Bulldogs that year.
Subsequently, Stafford was Georgia’s starting quarterback in both the 2007 and 2008 seasons, with Cox as his backup.
It’s unclear if Cox or Tereshinski are the players mentioned by Stafford in her stellar podcast appearance.
