ESPN host Stephen A. Smith has slammed “idiots who keep their mouths shut” on social media as it relates to the NBA investigation into Oklahoma City Thunder’s Josh Giddey over an alleged inappropriate relationship with a minor.
“We know an investigation is underway. That’s all we know. We don’t know anything else,” Smith said on his self-titled show on Monday. “Do you know why Stephen A. didn’t say anything? Because you can sue idiots.
“You don’t just run your damn mouth about something so serious.”
The 21-year-old Giddey is under investigation by the NBA, it was confirmed by the league itself on Friday. No charges have been filed so far and there is no police involvement in the alleged incident.
The allegations against Giddey began circulating through now-deleted social media posts showing images of the Australian being seen with a girl who was reportedly a high school student at the time.

Giddey, 21, is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a minor
Among the now-deleted social media posts was a video of Giddey allegedly spending time with the woman at a nightclub.
The age of consent in US states ranges from 16 to 18, while the minimum age to legally enter a nightclub is 21.
The states with the age of consent under 18 typically have additional laws that limit how old one of the individuals can be to legally obtain consent, which is usually only a few years older than the younger individual.
Giddey has addressed the allegations, telling reporters on Friday: ‘I obviously understand the question, but there is no further comment at this time.
‘I understand the question guys, I completely understand that you want to know more about it. I have nothing to say at this time.”
Giddey started the Thunder’s most recent game against the Philadelphia 76ers last Saturday and his status has not changed ahead of Oklahoma City’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday.
Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault also commented on the matter without disclosing other details.

Giddey was asked about the allegations but shrugged off questions and declined comment
“Personal matter, and I have no comment on it,” Daigneault said. ‘Available to play. Will play. No change in status from a basketball standpoint. Yet I have no further comment on anything else.’
“Based on the information we have at this time, that is the decision we have made. Honestly, it’s not even a decision,” Daigneault continued.
Smith has had a reputation for being brash and outspoken on almost every topic in sports for nearly two decades. Smith has covered the NBA for various media outlets since 1994.
Giddey was the No. 6 overall pick by Oklahoma City in the 2021 NBA Draft.
