‘A part where it doesn’t matter what I look like is exciting’: Stephanie Beacham, 75, calls Coronation Street her favorite job in her 60-year career

Stephanie Beacham revealed that she could “heavy a sigh of relief” at reviving her character as Martha Fraser in Coronation Street, as it is one of her favorite roles from her 60-year career.

The 75-year-old actress, who rose to fame playing the glamorous Sable Colby opposite Joan Collins on the 1980s American soap opera Dynasty, said it’s “exciting” to be on the cobblestones as you don’t have to worry about “how I look”.

Stephanie first took on the role of Corrie in 2009 before briefly returning to the role last month.

The veteran star admitted that she can finally use her professional RADA training while playing Martha, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s.

She said Mirror: ‘Taking on a role where my appearance doesn’t matter is something very exciting. It didn’t matter how I was lit or from what angle I was shot. It makes me breathe a sigh of relief and think, “Finally!”

“The important thing was to play the character as I was taught from the inside out, instead of concentrating on the external. Beneath the outer wrapping, so to speak, I am a fully developed and still developing creature with plenty of life experience to bring to a role.’

Stephanie looks forward to taking on similar roles in the future and has no plans to retire as it ‘keeps me young’.

She added: ‘I don’t think the actors will retire. We keep going until we can’t anymore. Acting, with all its challenges, keeps me young.’

The Bad Girls star was last seen on Cobbles in 2009 when Martha and her former love interest Ken Barlow, played by 90-year-old Bill Roache, embarked on an affair behind his wife Deirdre’s back.

Stephanie’s original stint on the Cobbles lasted only five months, but she became part of Corrie’s folklore.

Martha courted Ken while living on a barge, having recently separated from her husband, believing Ken to be a widower after he told her that the mother of their son Peter had passed away.

They bonded over a shared love of literature and after falling in love they finally kissed.

Guilt-ridden, Ken confessed to his marriage to Deirdre, prompting Martha’s decision to end their affair.

But the couple still couldn’t resist, eventually sleeping together and intending to leave Weatherfield before Ken thought better of it and stayed with Deirdre.
