NBA star Steph Curry has issued an official opposition to the development of a row of affordable housing units that are slated to be built behind his multimillion-dollar mansion.
The Golden State Warriors star and his wife, Ayesha, sent a letter to the city of Atherton opposing the project, which would see as many as 16 three-story townhouses spring up in the middle of their super-rich California neighborhood.
The Currys said the housing project would pose a threat to the “safety and privacy” of themselves and their children, nothing more than the location and height of the rowhouses residents leer at in their $31 million mansion.
His neighbors have also spoken out against the project, with some saying that building affordable homes in a city where a single acre costs $8 million is pointless.

In a letter sent to the city on January 18, the Currys expressed concern about the new houses looming over theirs.
“As Atherton residents…we have been following housing item updates with particular interest in the 23 Oakwood property,” they wrote.
‘We’re hesitant to add to the ‘not in our backyard’ rhetoric (literally), but we wanted to send out a note before today’s meeting. Safety and privacy for ourselves and our children remains our top priority and one of the main reasons we chose Atherton as our home.
At a minimum, the Currys requested that plans for the new homes include taller fences and extensive landscaping that would block views of their property.
The Atherton council decided to develop the lot behind the Currys after facing pressure to comply with the state’s affordable housing plan, which is developing 348 units in communities of varying income levels over the next eight years.
The city opted to do the building at 23 Oakwood Boulevard, the 1.52-acre parcel next to the Currys’, at the request of property owner David Arata.
Arata inherited the property from his mother nearly three years ago and said the rowhouses would look like a “small village” rather than a housing complex as some critics have characterized it.

“It would be more of a small town than a big apartment building,” he said. the almanac. ‘Housing element’ when you mention that people break; they think it’s going to be low-income and have massive buildings attached to it.’

“We kindly ask that the City adopt the new housing element without the inclusion of 23 Oakwood,” they wrote. “If that weren’t enough for the state, we ask that the city commit to investing in significantly higher fencing and landscaping to block sight lines to our family’s property.”
