NEW LONDON, Conn. — The tall steeple and roof of a historic church in Connecticut collapsed Thursday, leaving a gaping hole in the top of the building and turning the front into a pile of rubble.
The cause of the collapse of the First Congregational Church in downtown New London was not immediately known. No injuries were reported, city and church officials said in posts on Facebook.
State police rescue teams and search dogs responded after the collapse. Efforts by first responders were still ongoing late Thursday afternoon to confirm that no one had been injured, U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney, who represents New London, said in a statement.
The stone building dates to about 1850, according to state building records, although the community dates it to the mid-17th century, according to the website.
Engaging Heaven Church, which also worships in the space, said on Facebook that no one was there at the time of the collapse.
Phone calls to the council and Engaging Heaven were not immediately returned.
