Joel Nathan Fitzpatrick Burtt: Rapist bashed, choked and repeatedly sexually assaulted woman in luxury hotel room

A man from northern New South Wales has been found guilty of the violent attack and rape of a woman at the luxury Star Casino and hotel in 2022.

Joel Nathan Fitzpatrick Burtt, 22, was convicted of four counts of rape, one count of sexual assault and one count of strangulation of a woman in a room at the five-star Sydney hotel.

Fitzpatrick Burtt heard the jury’s decision in front of his sisters and tearful mother in Sydney’s Downing Centre District Court on Tuesday.

His family cried and hugged him before he was led from the dock by prison guards.

“I love you, Mom,” Fitzpatrick Burtt called. “I can take care of myself.”

The jury found that he brutally attacked and raped the woman on October 29, 2022 after a night out in Sydney.

The couple returned to his hotel room after a birthday party for a mutual acquaintance, where he grabbed the woman by the neck and forcibly held her down.

After she refused his request for sex, he hit her on the head and raped her.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, Fitzpatrick Burtt sexually abused her multiple times. He then kicked the woman in the face when she began to cry. He poured ice on her while she was on the ground and stomped on her.

Witnesses heard screams from the neighbors.

She then left the hotel room and spoke to hotel security and police, then went to the hospital.
