A beloved Massachusetts father has been found dead near his family’s vacation home after disappearing during a trip to South Carolina’s posh Hilton Head Island.

Stanley Kotowski, 60, of Boston, was last seen around 10:30 a.m. on August 16 when he left an apartment the family had paid for with friends, The Island Packet reports.

At approximately 11:30 a.m. Monday, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office received a call to the residence.

They said they found Kotowski’s body underneath the building and found him around 3:30 p.m.

Kotowski was last seen on camera 10 days earlier, wearing no shoes and carrying no phone, further raising concerns among his family as the search on the island expanded.

ā€œHe just walked out the door,ā€ said Kotowski’s wife Jackie, told Boston 25 Newsand added that she was already concerned about his mental state before he disappeared

“He had really bad insomnia for a month,” she said. “This is something completely new. He doesn’t have dementia.

But, Jackie said, “his anxiety just kept getting worse and worse, and he started getting a little paranoid. He thought someone was following him.”

She added that he began to believe that Sea Pines was some sort of “false trap” and made several statements claiming that people in the area were “watching” him, according to WJCL.

Before Jackie left, her husband told her, ā€œPromise me you’ll go on without me.ā€

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office eventually expanded its search to include helicopters, boats, drones and dogs.

Officials searched wooded areas and vacant buildings and entered Kotowski’s information into a national missing persons database as their presence on the island grew.

His son Zak had previously stated that he could be anywhere in the area.

“He’s a strong person,” Zak said. “He’s athletic. He could, even in a state of ecstasy, without shoes, go past a couple of towns, especially in 72 hours.”

They hoped someone had seen him on surveillance cameras and could help with the search.

The family has not commented since Kotowski’s body was found, but confirmed the death Monday afternoon.
