Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer has retired after 38 years at the helm of the Cardinal and will leave the sport as the winningest coach in NCAA basketball history.
VanDerveer’s NCAA record of 1,216 wins also includes seven years as a head coach at Idaho and Ohio State.
VanDerveer, 70, led Stanford to three NCAA championships in 1990, 1992 and 2021.
She will be replaced by Kate Paye, a former player and longtime Cardinal assistant coach, as the program switches to the Atlantic Coast Conference.
VanDerveer got a one-season break in 1995 while coaching Stanford to coach the U.S. women’s basketball team in the 1996 Olympics.
