Stacey Solomon is praised by fans as ’empathetic and caring’ as the presenter helps heartbroken couple create their dream home in emotional episode of Renovation Rescue: ‘When you mend someone’s home you mend their heartbreak too’
Stacey Solomon was praised by fans after she transformed a couple’s home after a horrific few years in a heartfelt episode of Renovation Rescue.
In the second episode of the new Channel 4 series, which aired on Wednesday, the presenter visited Darryl and Jo in South Devon after their passion project turned into an absolute nightmare.
Dodgy builders, redundancies and a terrifying health crisis left the couple heartbroken after already spending a whopping £300,000 on renovating the house.
And when Stacey met the couple, she was tasked with going the extra mile for the last £30,000 of the couple’s budget, while helping the couple discover how to do some of the remaining jobs themselves.
In an emotional episode, Jo broke down in tears as they sat in the (almost) completed house, reflecting: ‘It’s been so terrible and you lose yourself a bit too, but to now be able to share with the children and enjoy it just like. It will take a while before we realize we can do it.”

Darryl and Jo had renovated three houses together so were no strangers to the renovation process.
However, after the start of the process in 2020 they realized within months that all was not as it seemed and things quickly turned sour.
Darryl explained, “First we had a leaky roof, so there was water all over the floor.”
Jo added: ‘But when that started to happen, we also started to wonder what else was really going on.’
After calling in a building inspector, the pair discovered that much of the work already done did not meet building regulations and they had to start all over again.
But by then the couple had already handed over £127,000.
“All that money we paid was just dead. Right in jail,” Darryl admitted.
And if that wasn’t hard enough, the couple also had a particularly tough year when Darryl was laid off and Jo suffered a serious health crisis when she came down with Covid.

‘At the beginning of April I got Covid and it actually went very badly, in the end I was free for about four months, I was in hospital about three times. Oxygen, jerry cans at home and it really cost us six,” Jo admitted.
Fighting back tears, Darryl added, “It was horrible because you didn’t know… it’s hard to talk about. You didn’t know where you were [Jo] we go. You took her to the hospital and you had to say goodbye, it was a challenging time. It was heavy.’
At the start of the episode the house looked completely run down, but by the end the couple, with the help of Stacey, had transformed the property into a beautiful space with an incredible open plan kitchen and living room.
‘Omg, I’m so happy for you, I want to live here!’ Stacey exclaimed when she saw the end result.
Coming in just under budget, the presenter explained: ‘I believe you probably saved at least between £6,000 and 7,000 by making your own fitted furniture, wallpapering, decorating, fitting your kitchen and laying all your flooring. That’s incredible.
‘When I first met you, did you fall in love with this house? Have you fallen in love with it again?
Crying Jo explained: ‘It’s like moving forward, it’s like the next step. And it was so terrible and you lose yourself a little bit too.
“But now to be able to share it with the kids and just enjoy it. It will take a while before we realize we can do it.”
Darryl added: “What we have here is something special and something that belongs to us and it has been a journey, but this is the beginning of us being able to look at it in a different way.”
Fans were overcome with emotion after watching the episode as they praised Stacey and her efforts.
