A man has been arrested after allegedly bringing a knife into a Sydney church and interrupting worshipers during mass.

NSW Police were called after reports that a man was behaving suspiciously at St Mary Magdalene Catholic Church on New South Head Road, Rose Bay, about 6.30pm on Sunday.

The 36-year-old man was arrested and taken to Waverley police station after officers discovered he was allegedly carrying capsicum spray and a multi-tool with a blade.

The Bangor man was charged with possession of a prohibited weapon and possession of a knife.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Downing Center Local Court on July 26.

An armed man has been arrested after interrupting an innocent group of churchgoers attending mass in Sydney

The incident took place in the middle of the 6 p.m. Sunday mass at the church.
