Starting off with a bang! St. Louis City SC WINS its opening game by coming from a goal down to beat Austin 3-2… setting up its home debut next week against Charlotte FC

In the first game in franchise history, St. Louis City SC’s Joao Klauss scored the game-winner to defeat last season’s Western Conference finalist Austin FC on the road.

After striking first through Tim Parker’s boots, Austin’s Sebastian Driussi and Jon Gallagher took the lead at 72′.

But New Jersey native Jared Stroud tied the contest just six minutes later, setting the team up for its first point in franchise history.

Klauss wasn’t satisfied, though: he ran into the box, cut back, and then pushed the ball with the outside of his right boot into the goalkeeper’s right post.

He pulled away, falling to the ground in disbelief just before the corner flag as his teammates piled on and then held on to seal the win.

St. Louis City’s Tim Parker scored the first goal of the game, and the first in team history, in the 24th minute as he worked his way into the mouth of the goal to head in Eduard Lowen’s corner kick after than Austin goalie Brad Stuver. he got off his line but couldn’t corral the pass.

Austin got the equalizer from Sebastian Driussi, last season’s runner-up for league MVP, four minutes into first-half stoppage time.

The goalscoring play began with a through ball from the defensive zone that Driussi saved just outside the box.

He took his time, steadied the ball and lifted a soft shot over the head of St. Louis goalie Roman Burki and into the corner of the net to make it 1-1.

Jon Gallagher’s goal in the 72nd minute put Austin ahead.

Gallagher was driven into the box by a direct pass from Diego Fagundez and deftly flicked the ball to his left foot while in traffic before unleashing a shot into the bottom right corner of the net.

He ran to the side, collapsed on the field and was piled on by his teammates.

But a blatant mistake by Austin’s rookie defender Kipp Keller allowed Stroud a chance to tie the game and reverse the momentum of the match.

Keller was passing the ball back to Stuver, but he didn’t see Stroud, who had just gotten up off the ground after being tackled.

Stroud seized the opportunity quickly, firing a right-footed shot past a defenseless Stuver and into the net on 78 minutes.

That set the stage for Klauss and his world-class goal. He received a long ball from Nicholas Gioacchini, divided the defenders and dribbled deep into the attacking zone before moving back towards goal and using the outside of his right foot to fire a shot into the left end of the net.
