St Lawrence Queensland: Hungarian tourist couple planning to marry before highway crash

Police make heartbreaking discovery about a young couple in a horror highway accident that killed a 29-year-old woman

  • A woman was killed in a single car accident
  • Her partner suffered minor injuries
  • He intended to propose to her

Heartbreaking details of a horrific single car accident revealed that the couple involved would soon be engaged before the accident ended one of their lives.

A woman, 29, was in the process of moving from Mackay to Brisbane with her partner, 28, when their white Mitsubishi car flipped over just after 7 a.m. in St. Lawrence on July 3.

The male driver and female passenger had exited a straight section of the Bruce Highway before going off the road about 2 km south of Waverly Creek.

During the crash, the woman was partially thrown from the car and died on the spot while her partner was airlifted to hospital for his injuries.

It has since been revealed that the male driver intended to propose to his partner before the fatal accident.

The Bruce Highway was closed for several hours while police and emergency services assessed the situation.

RACQ CapRescue flew the man to Rockhampton Hospital for treatment after he was freed from the crash site so the rescue helicopter could reach him.

He has now been released from the hospital.

The couple had both arrived from Hungary some time ago before deciding to move to the city and their car was full of personal belongings when it flipped over.

After overturning, the car had straightened up and rested on its rear wheels until emergency services arrived.

Weather conditions prior to the accident were mildly wet, with occasional showers before the crash, but it is unknown if this contributed to the incident.

All witnesses, or anyone who may have dash cam footage from the day, have been called in by police to assist in their ongoing investigation.

In the Mackay and Whitsunday regions, two more fatal accidents occurred in the 10 days following the rolled wagon in St. Lawrence.

Police have addressed the issue and asked motorists to consider road safety and heightened vigilance in the area.

The toll in the Mackay district for 2023 now stands at eight deaths, nearly the ten killed in all of 2020.

The number of road deaths in Mackay has skyrocketed since the turn of the century, with five fatalities in one week of May 2022.

“We pushed the fatal five [message] time and time again, and what we are seeing more recently and unfortunately in the month of May is people choosing to ignore the messages coming from Queensland Police and our partner emergency services,” Mackay Acting Inspector Jeremy Novosel told the Courier Mail at the time.

“It is devastating for everyone involved. It is devastating to the families. It is devastating for the police to have to show up to deliver what is probably one of the most difficult messages we have to deal with in our line of work.”
