A man has died after being stabbed during a wild fight on one of Australia’s busiest beach towns.

Police were called to Melbourne’s St Kilda Beach at around 7:30pm on Sunday to find the victim near Pier Rd with multiple stab wounds.

His identity is not yet known.

Those responsible disappeared into the packed summer crowd after fleeing on foot and are still on the run.

Detectives are now examining CCTV footage of the area in an effort to track down the killer, as witness accounts continue to come in.

Horrified onlookers enjoying a night by the water at the tourist hotspot said uniformed, plain-clothes police officers descended on the gruesome scene “very quickly”.

A police helicopter was also deployed afterwards.

There were policemen everywhere. It was crazy,” a St Kilda regular told the herald sun.
