St George Dragons skipper Ben Hunt denies there is a ‘snitch’ at the embattled NRL club

Skipper Ben Hunt insists there is no cultural problem with the embattled Dragoons and denies there is a snitch in their ranks after a furious tirade from former captain James Graham.

The merged club limps into the 2023 NRL season with a shocking list of off-field incidents that began when just three players, including Hunt, turned up for the season-ending awards night.

The club was then pumped to a 42-24 tune in the Charity Shield by the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Turning a headache into a migraine, teammates Mikaele Ravalawa and Zane Musgrove got into a massive argument at the team hotel at 6am after a night on the booze.

Adding to the team’s woes, striker Francis Molo recently appeared in court and admitted to having been charged with domestic bullying since December.

The NRL’s integrity unit is now looking into the matter and will make a decision on any punishment following a court hearing scheduled for March 22.

The team has already been forced to pull out of the fifth and eighth Talatau Amone, which is currently awaiting trial next month on a charge of reckless grievous bodily harm at the company in connection with an alleged hammer attack.

But Hunt dismisses any criticism of the club’s culture.

“I don’t really have a problem with the culture here,” said the skipper. channel 9.

“Obviously something happened with a couple of people that the club is working on and working with those guys to help them.” In general, I don’t think there is a cultural problem.

Hunt doesn’t think there’s a culture problem at the Dragons despite a series of off-field incidents and an on-field beating.

‘There’s a great group of guys here and they’re all working hard every day to be better. Everybody wants to win, so I don’t have a problem.

“We had a discussion as a playgroup about the incident and what had happened. We addressed it and said it’s time to move on and focus on rugby league. (We said) that these things no longer happen here and that everything is about football.

‘The start of the season couldn’t be quicker for us. We have to go out and play some games. If we start playing and winning games, then it doesn’t matter.’

Hunt also brushed off Graham’s suggestions that there was a ‘snitch’ in the ranks.

‘Everything seems to go out these days. No matter what happens, you can’t keep it a secret,” she said.

I don’t think there’s a mole in the group. I don’t think there is anyone who has intentionally gone out and ratted on the club. It’s just something that happens these days.

The disastrous offseason has the Dragons tied with the New Zealand Warriors at $6.50 for the fewest wins this season, with only the Newcastle Knights and new franchise Dolphins at lower odds.

The pressure has also increased on coach Anthony Griffin.

Hunt and Griffin have a lot of work to do ahead of the club’s Round 2 season opener against the Gold Coast Titans.

Fortunately for the Dragons, the club has a first week bye and Hunt said that time would be used to address what happened in Charity Shield week in Mudgee.

“What we did in Mudgee wasn’t good for us, but we think that’s not what we do. I definitely think we have much more to offer than what we show”, said the broker.

“Throughout the preseason, we’ve been building on something really good, so in a way, I’m kind of happy that it happened there. We probably got that game out of our system and we know we have to be better now.

“It’s a bit of a wake-up call that the games are here now and we need to be better than we were.”
