St George Dragons legend Steve ‘Slippery’ Morris recovering after suffering stroke at a café

Rugby legend Steve ‘Slippery’ Morris has a coffee shop owner to thank for saving his life after he suffered a stroke this week.

Morris, 66, who won a premiership with the St George Dragons in 1979, collapsed at the Central Perk cafe in Kiama on the NSW south coast.

The alert business owner administered first aid and called an ambulance, before rushing Morris to Sydney’s Prince of Wales Hospital remove a clot from his brain.

Surgeons also placed a stent in an attempt to clear Morris’ blood vessel.

Remarkably, the halfback winger has been tipped to make a full recovery.

“It could have been a lot worse,” said his son, former Bulldog center Josh Morris News Corp.

‘Luckily we were able to get him to Prince of Wales in time. At first it looked very bad, but it seems he has made a remarkable recovery.

‘They did a scan and found quite a substantial clot in his brain. They surgically removed it.

“We visited him that evening and he was sitting up chatting.”

Morris played 247 first-year games during his decorated football career: 187 with the Dragons and 60 for the Roosters.

He also made five Origin appearances for NSW and played one Test for Australia.
